My review of Slow Roast Pork by S E Lynes
S E Lynes (author of ‘Valentina’) is one of the contributors to the Dark Minds compilation of crime stories and for my turn on the blog tour, I was sent her short story to read and review – entitled ‘Slow Roast Pork’. I have to admit when I saw the title I did think ‘What on earth…….’ as it seemed such a random one but all does become clear and actually when you read the story, the title absolutely works.
It does only take about 5 minutes to read but the author has managed to pack an awful lot of character and suspense into those few minutes. It starts off innocently with a wife cooking dinner and waiting for her husband to come home from work but then turns into something more sinister. I thought I knew where the story was heading but the writer’s talent for planting doubt in the reader’s mind didn’t make it a foregone conclusion.
It would be a real shame to tell any more and spoil the story so I’m going to stop here. However if this quality writing is indicative of others in the collection (and having already read full length novels by contributing authors Steven Dunne, and Lisa Hall I know that they are superb storytellers), then the reader is in for a treat. I’ve purchased a Kindle copy of the full book to delve into over Christmas – at just £2.99 for 40 stories it’s a steal and helping to support two worthy charities.
