#EyeSpy 🚝 💺 by @c.m.ewanPublished by @panmacmillan thanks to @bookbreakuk for the PB copy for reviewWho would have thought that a simple game of Eye Spy would lead to a terrifying journey on a Eurostar train.Following a short break in Paris, the drama begins at check-in for the return journey to London and doesn’t let up. When the ‘Bad Man’ that four year old Molly spots is seated in the same carriage as Mark and his two daughters this turns into a mile a minute ride of unbelievable tension and suspense. Mark’s wife Claire is not with them, she has to work but insisted they go without her. However Claire has secrets of her own and as the story progressed, there is a foreboding that this train journey will not end well for anyone.Mark has his own sad backstory which still haunts him, as does Claire – this is how they met. Mark isn’t a superhero – he’s just an normal dad, trying to get along with his moody and stroppy teenage stepdaughter Freya but from the situation he finds himself in on that train he has to dig deep and find every piece of courage and intuition to keep them safe. Seemingly outwitted at every turn by those who would suffer no guilt for the consequences of their actions, he must find a way to get his family off that train alive. With chapters counting down the timeline to arrival in London, the suspense never lets up. There are aspects to this thriller to make it different from the norm and although I guessed some of where it was heading, there was an intake of breath at certain revelations and twists. This was a cracking read and I thoroughly enjoyed it even if I didn’t have any fingernails left at the end! I’ve been on the Eurostar many times but thankfully, unlike Mark and his family, the only drama I’ve encountered is not putting my watch forward an hour on arrival in Paris 😳A definite recommended read.@randomthingstours #cmewanauthor #thrillerbook #myreadingcornerblog

Harry’s effect on the next generation is less predictable, and enables his granddaughter to deal with an unspeakable trauma, while her gentle husband feels seen for who he truly is.Can Harry stay and make a new life before it’s too late, or will he find himself cast out again, punished for having witnessed and understood too much?LOVE LANE is a searing portrayal of escape and entrapment, and a powerful exploration of what home and family can really be. 📚📚#patrickgale

Breathlessly compulsive courtroom drama with expertly-crafted twists that you won’t see coming, Dissection of a Murder is the razor-sharp debut novel from Jo Murray.
A dead judge. A silent defendant. And a courtroom full of liars.
When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her.
To make things worse, he’s refusing to talk. How is she supposed to prove herself on what appears to be an unwinnable case?
Losing is not an option. She must find the most persuasive argument. Trials aren’t won by convincing judges or fellow barristers – they’re all about convincing a jury.
Suddenly, Leila finds herself fighting not only to keep Jack out of prison, but also to keep her own secrets buried.
It’s true what they say – there are two sides to every story.
Guilty or not guilty?
You decide . . .📚📚#courtroomdrama #jomurrayauthor

Blog Tour #BookReview#Huntingshadows : #PeterTob Blog Tour #BookReview#Huntingshadows : #PeterTobin @jane.dhamilton @mirror.books📚 Two of Peter Tobin's three known victims, all young girls, were from Scotland (Vicky Hamilton), Angelika Kluk (who was Polish but returned to Scotland each summer) with one being from Essex (Dinah McNicol). He is the perfect example of a killer hiding in plain sight. A chameleon who adapted to his surroundings, who blended into the community, often having a religious bias, constantly changing his name and leaving town suddenly owing money to unsuspecting people – not to mention the devastated lives left behind him.Jane Hamilton has written this book with a forensic eye for detail. The writing is extremely readable – no gratuitous detail, just information shared with a human touch. I felt that Jane actually cared and that of course whilst getting ahead with a story was important for her career, her integrity came into play too. Her compassion for the victims, their families and Tobin’s ex wives who also suffered at his hands shines clearly through the pages.Tobin was allowed to get away with his crimes, partly because of his own manipulation of people and knowing how to play the system but also because of failures of the policing system at the time. With police forces across the country not generally sharing information and with no centralised system, this was a gift to killers like him.It wasn’t until Operation Anagram was in force (Holmes 2) that killers like Tobin had their movements tracked. The police were sure that there were other victims and so every piece of information from various forces about Tobin over the years were logged to a central database. Details and locations of missing women were included, details double checked. The families of the victims were to finally have answers.Although Tobin is the focus of the book, the author refers to the murders of other victims, some of which remain unsolved – this highlighted that some families will never have the answers or justice they deserve.A difficult subject but written with empathy showing respect to the victims and their families.#truecrime #myreadingcornerblog @randomthingstours

BLOG TOUR #BOOKREVIEW#BOOKOFFORBIDDENWORDS by @l BLOG TOUR #BOOKREVIEW#BOOKOFFORBIDDENWORDS by @louisefeinauthorOut now with @harper360uk @williammorrowbooks📚 I’ve read (and loved) two of Louise’s previous books The London Bookshop Affair (2024) The Hidden Child (2021) and was thrilled to be part of this tour.Set over differing timelines and told from the perspective of three main female characters, Charlotte, Lysbette and Milly, this is a captivating story of censorship through the ages – from the 16th century through to the 20th and the brave women who despite the danger they faced from accusations of heresy and communism in an intolerant world were determined to make their voices heard.A 400 year old encrypted manuscript is the focus of the story; in 1500’s Paris renowned printer of theological books Charlotte Guillard is defying the authorities and secretly printing literature that has been banned. A brutal murder is the catalyst for Charlotte’s determination to protect the manuscript for future generations in any way she can.The stories of all three women were beautifully drawn but for me Milly was the star. Hiding secrets of her past from her family through necessity, her feelings of loneliness and boredom were palpable but through her friendship with a local librarian, she was afforded some independence at a time when women couldn’t even open a bank account without their husband’s permission. She loved her husband and children of course but housework wasn’t her natural forte and she didn’t fit in with other mothers at the school gates. Her part was central to the story however actions have consequences, especially in McCarthy’s era of accusations for anything deemed to be subversive or “unAmerican,” whether it be books, teaching or people.Compelling, powerful, rich with detail and superbly researched, blending fact and fiction, this is a story to savour. There is always an element of Louise’s books that is both thought provoking and educating and Book of Forbidden Words is no exception. I was drawn into this from the first page and have no hesitation in recommending. 📚@randomthingstours #myreadingcornerblog #historicalfiction
#currentreadI love Louise’s books and thrilled #currentreadI love Louise’s books and thrilled to be reviewing next month for the upcoming blog tour with @randomthingstours#bookofforbiddenwords by @louisefeinauthorPublishing in UK 26 February with @williammorrowbooks📚 1552, PARIS: The printing press is quickly spreading new ideas across Europe, threatening the power of church and state and unleashing a wave of book burning and heretic hunting. When frightened ex-nun Lysbette Angiers arrives at Charlotte Guillard’s famous printing shop with her manuscript, neither woman knows just how far the powerful elite will go to prevent the spread of Lysbette’s audacious ideas. 1952, NEW YORK: Milly Bennett is a lonely housewife struggling to find her way in her new neighborhood amidst the paranoid clamors of McCarthy’s America. She finds her life taking an unexpected turn when a relic from her past presents her with a 400-year-old manuscript to decipher, pulling her into a vortex of danger that threatens to shatter her world. From the risky backstreets of sixteenth-century Paris to the unpredictable suburbs of mid-twentieth century New York, the stakes couldn’t be higher when, 400 years apart, Milly, Lysbette, and Charlotte each face a reality where the spread of ideas are feared and every effort is made to suppress them.Dramatic and affecting, and inspired by the real-life encrypted Voynich manuscript, Book of Forbidden Words is both an engrossing story about a timeless struggle that echoes through the ages and a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dare to let their words be heard. 📚#louisefein #historicalfiction

Publisher @headlinebooksSynopsis in comments📚 Jill Mansell has been a favourite author since the very first book and that one book a year is something I look forward to.There is so much to love about this story. The glorious setting of Venice and its islands which I love AND a river cruise (I’ve done many ship cruises, including to Venice, but I’m still trying to persuade my OH to go on a river cruise) plus of course characters that you can take to your heart and feel every moment of joy and heartache with them.At the age of 72 widowed Disa has made a discovery which upends her life as she knew it. To find out more, her destination is Venice and a luxury river cruise to which she invites her grand-daughter Fen. Fen is delighted at the prospect of spending time with her beloved grandmother although an incident at the airport involving a scotch egg leads to Fen finding an unexpected connection. Add in a good looking ex rugby star/much in demand TV personality and his best friend (not so in demand or as good looking but nonetheless loyal, kind and funny) and you have the perfect cast of both main and supporting characters – looking at you especially Hattie and Guy!One of the things I always love about Jill’s books is the way the story evolves and changes – at their heart they are romance led and you are expecting that HEA but there is always an emotional depth too, and I love the humour – making me snort with laughter one minute to then having wet eyes the next. I think this is the most emotional of her books which I wasn’t expecting however ultimately the story is an uplifting one of love, family, second chances and enduring friendship. I expected to love it and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Another recommended read from this very talented author. Finally, I just had to Google ‘Lemon Drop Martini’s’. Why have I never heard of these before. 🍸Thanks to Anne of @randomthingstours for the invite and the publisher for the copy to review#myreadingcornerblog #romancebookstagram #jillmansell

Published by @headlinebooksBlurb in comments📚 REVIEW: Camille and Aubrey come from very different worlds. Camille from a privileged and wealthy, albeit shady family, and bar worker Aubrey, living from one paycheck to another in a shared house with no living family. One person connects these women, hot shot lawyer Ben Bayliss – Camille’s husband. With Camille being increasingly suspicious of her husband’s activities and tiring of his control she turns detective which is how she comes across Aubrey. In turn, Aubrey is keen to know the truth about events from 10 years before of which she is convinced Ben has information. This is an intriguing and fast paced story where the tentacles of corruption and lies spread far and wide. In marrying Ben, Camille swapped one form of control for another but however much she despises her father, even she was unaware of how deep the family secrets were. Whilst there are some horrendous characters here that are so easy to dislike, there are one or two that have some kind of moral compass and whose dodgy dealings are a shade of grey, rather than black.Told from various perspectives within a shifting timeline, Anatomy of an Alibi was addictive and a story that I was completely invested in. I probably enjoyed this even more than First Lie Wins as I was rooting for one particular character. As I anticipated from this author, nothing is straightforward and I was taken by surprise on more than one occasion by the twists and turns. I must confess I did find the timeline a little confusing at first, especially as I was reading a digital copy and its not so easy to flick back and forth, but for me the easiest point of reference was to to focus on a certain notable date in the story and then take in events from either side of that.A tense and twisty thriller, recommended.#ashleyelston #myreadingcornerblog #thrillerbooks
