A beautiful setting, mouth watering food, and a handsome hero. There was much to like about Love on Lake Como. Having spent time there some years ago I was looking forward to being reacquainted with this gorgeous location.Following heartbreak from a failed relationship, (Indigo) Indie Summers is persuaded to take up a job as a concierge at Villa Adeste, a Sublime Retreats luxury villa. Her confidence is at rock bottom and Indie is unsure if she can cope with the demands of the guests whose expectations are high but her sister Rose, the head chef at the Villa, is a superb backup when Indie has a wobble. In dealing with the Texan Six, a group of boisterous Americans, Indie finds her feet and confidence again. Love is unexpected when she meets Marco, a rather serious security guard outside a nearby celebrity’s villa who shoos her away. Marco has his own history which comes to light in a rather dramatic way. This is very much a slow burn romance. I enjoyed the will they/won’t they aspect as these two people tiptoe around each other, each wondering if they dare trust again and take a chance. The setting of Lake Como and Bellagio is superbly described and I now want to go back! The close relationship between sisters Rose and Indie was lovely to see and with its touches of humour and some excellent supporting characters (Aunt Juniper was just wonderful) this was a lovely read to while away a few hours. My one slight disappointment was the ending; after the gentle pace of the story we were suddenly at the conclusion and an Epilogue. This seemed rather rushed and I would have liked to see a little more development of the story before this sudden conclusion.#myreadingcornerblog #romanticfiction #joyskye
#BOOKREVIEW #TheYacht by @kaytenunn2 Published #BOOKREVIEW#TheYacht by @kaytenunn2Published by @noexitpressSynopsis in comments📚📚📚
I’ve been binge watching all the many series of the luxury charter yacht TV programme, ‘Below Deck’ for months and this destination thriller ticked all the boxes. (Very much like this book, the TV series features wealthy guests with too much money but with no class or manners)The story is told from multiple perspectives – the Deckie, the Trophy Wife, the Detective – amongst others. An extremely wealthy family, headed by property billionaire Evan Thyssen, is taking delivery of his latest status symbol, a new luxury yacht for a few weeks of sailing around the Mediterranean. This really is a dysfunctional family with corruption and toxicity aplenty. Everything is for appearances, however below the surface there are affairs, secrets and financial problems with the chief clearly spending above his means. It sounds idyllic, sailing around the ports and coves of the Med, however there is one person on board with revenge on their mind. It’s easy to figure out the who, but the why isn’t fully revealed until later. It’s no lie to say I was gripped from the first page. The short chapters made it so very readable and that undercurrent of foreboding was always there. We know from the prologue that there is one survivor, but who is this unnamed person? At the end of some chapters, social media comments are included which added interest. It’s fair to say that with the exception of one or two crew members, most of the characters are instantly unlikeable, indeed, some are so awful that I really didn’t care whether they survived or not. This isn’t just a story of entitled wealthy people, there is also a darker and more harrowing strand to the story which is where the investigating Detective fits in.I thoroughly enjoyed this well plotted and pacy thriller and been trying to keep this review as vague as possible to avoid spoilers. It really is a story you have to discover for yourselves. Definitely recommended.

(DS Joseph Ashe Book 1)Published by @harvillbooksBook synopsis in comments📚📚📚I was a huge fan of Sarah Hilary’s DI Marnie Rome crime series and this is another series which I will be following. Set in Derbyshire’s Peak District, we meet a new detective team, DI Laurie Bower, who has temporarily relocated from Manchester for family reasons, and DS Joseph Ashe, a lifelong resident of Edenscar.Joe has a troubled and tragic past. Seventeen years before, aged 11, he and fellow school friends were on a bus which went off the road into a reservoir, the ‘drowning place’ of the title. Joe was the only survivor, and ever since both he and the town have struggled to come to terms with his survival; for various reasons he is viewed as a figure of both comfort and suspicion. His best friend Sammi was killed however he is always with Joe, giving advice, not as a child but a fully grown man. This element might seem a little unusual, whether used as a supernatural or as a coping element, but it is so well written that Sammi’s appearances fit naturally into the story. As you would expect from this author, the writing is superb, the vivid imagery of various locations, for example, the forest emit atmospheric and unsettling vibes and that sense of foreboding is prevalent throughout.Laurie and Joe don’t have time to draw breath when they are faced with one disturbing and murderous action after another. They work well together, Laurie can be rather prickly and doesn’t suffer fools. She is struggling with a difficult home situation as well as a bereavement, but will also put her hand up when in the wrong. Outwardly Joe’s behaviour is inscrutable – often subject to provocation, he keeps his emotions in check but he won’t hesitate to speak up if he thinks a wrong decision is being made. The tension and suspense is kept up throughout and the twisted revelations are plenty. The Drowning Place is a superb start to a new crime series with its background themes dealing with grief and survivors guilt. I loved it and wholeheartedly recommend.#myreadingcornerblog @randomthingstours #newcrimeseries #sarahhilary

I’ve been a huge fan of this series, have loved every book and although I know every series does have a natural end, I’m so sad that this is the final outing for DCS Kat Frank and her hologram partner AIDE Lock.Body of Lies begins a few months after the ending of Human Remains. Kat has returned home and to work but it is clear that she is still haunted by traumatic events and questions her own judgement at every turn. She is still heading the Future Policing Unit but the team are struggling. Her AI partner, AIDE Lock is again by her side, via the wrist bracelet Kat wears, but its quest for a human form makes Kat uneasy and as much as she relies on Lock, there are trust issues. The murder of an outspoken MP, vocal against the development of AI, thrusts the team not only into an investigation to find a killer but when a cyberattack threatens the entire country Kat and Lock are against the clock to discover who is behind it before more lives are lost. The author superbly navigates the emotional struggles of Kat and other members of her team, not only in dealing with trauma and loss but also showing a thought provoking view of both the benefits and dangers of the AI revolution which adds a level of relevance and authenticity. The final part of the story was gripping and dramatic. With the suspense racking up, there was shock at the revelations and ultimately the sad realisation that this was indeed the end. Jo Callaghan has created a fantastic crime series that has both heart and intelligence, all with a touch of dark humour. I really took these characters to my heart and I shall miss them, especially Lock. It (I still want to say he) could be infuriating but there was an endearing quality too and I did enjoy the bond that formed between Lock and Kat. I look forward to seeing what comes next by this very talented author.@thebookdealer

BLOG TOUR BOOK REVIEW #TheLastSecretofWickhamGran BLOG TOUR BOOK REVIEW#TheLastSecretofWickhamGrange - a dual time mystery by @zoemanlowbooks
Published by @bedfordsq.publishers and out now.📚 The story begins in 2006 when Caroline is attending her grandmother Frances’ funeral. Although much loved, Frances was not a blood relative (its complicated) and then to find out that she. and not her mother Betty, had inherited Wickham Grange, a large Victorian building now converted into flats was a shock; even more so when she discovers that she cannot sell the property without the consent of five women – all strangers to Caroline, not to mention the two elderly tenants who were protected from eviction. I was immediately intrigued – why the restriction and who were these women who were so afraid and hostile when Caroline approached them. There are many characters over the two timelines, the modern and late 1940s and it could have become confusing however the author manages the connections and transitions well. There were some characters that were quite unpleasant and I didn’t initially warm to Caroline. She had made her own life as a partner in a law firm and had the brusque manner of someone who just wanted rid of the building so that she could move on with her own plans. There are so many secrets to be revealed in this atmospheric story. At one time the Grange had been a place of safety for women but Caroline felt anything but safe with strange and unsettling occurrences, including the warning not to look for Lizzie Sixpence. Whoever she may be.This book may have had a sedate start but the two timelines led into an emotional and mysterious story with drama and sinister undertones. It didn’t take long to become engrossed in the lives of the residents at the Grange, especially with Frances and Maud and, despite a touch of misdirection, I correctly guessed part of the mystery, however there were more revelations that took me by surprise. With a powerful storyline and fully drawn characters there is much to like about this book. It had a conclusion that was both emotive and satisfying – I very much enjoyed it and would happily read more from Zoe Manlow.@randomthingstours #zoemanlow #myreadingcornerblog

#EyeSpy 🚝 💺 by @c.m.ewanPublished by @panmacmillan thanks to @bookbreakuk for the PB copy for reviewWho would have thought that a simple game of Eye Spy would lead to a terrifying journey on a Eurostar train.Following a short break in Paris, the drama begins at check-in for the return journey to London and doesn’t let up. When the ‘Bad Man’ that four year old Molly spots is seated in the same carriage as Mark and his two daughters this turns into a mile a minute ride of unbelievable tension and suspense. Mark’s wife Claire is not with them, she has to work but insisted they go without her. However Claire has secrets of her own and as the story progressed, there is a foreboding that this train journey will not end well for anyone.Mark has his own sad backstory which still haunts him, as does Claire – this is how they met. Mark isn’t a superhero – he’s just an normal dad, trying to get along with his moody and stroppy teenage stepdaughter Freya but from the situation he finds himself in on that train he has to dig deep and find every piece of courage and intuition to keep them safe. Seemingly outwitted at every turn by those who would suffer no guilt for the consequences of their actions, he must find a way to get his family off that train alive. With chapters counting down the timeline to arrival in London, the suspense never lets up. There are aspects to this thriller to make it different from the norm and although I guessed some of where it was heading, there was an intake of breath at certain revelations and twists. This was a cracking read and I thoroughly enjoyed it even if I didn’t have any fingernails left at the end! I’ve been on the Eurostar many times but thankfully, unlike Mark and his family, the only drama I’ve encountered is not putting my watch forward an hour on arrival in Paris 😳A definite recommended read.@randomthingstours #cmewanauthor #thrillerbook #myreadingcornerblog

Breathlessly compulsive courtroom drama with expertly-crafted twists that you won’t see coming, Dissection of a Murder is the razor-sharp debut novel from Jo Murray.
A dead judge. A silent defendant. And a courtroom full of liars.
When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her.
To make things worse, he’s refusing to talk. How is she supposed to prove herself on what appears to be an unwinnable case?
Losing is not an option. She must find the most persuasive argument. Trials aren’t won by convincing judges or fellow barristers – they’re all about convincing a jury.
Suddenly, Leila finds herself fighting not only to keep Jack out of prison, but also to keep her own secrets buried.
It’s true what they say – there are two sides to every story.

Blog Tour #BookReview #Huntingshadows : #PeterTob Blog Tour #BookReview#Huntingshadows : #PeterTobin @jane.dhamilton @mirror.books📚 Two of Peter Tobin's three known victims, all young girls, were from Scotland (Vicky Hamilton), Angelika Kluk (who was Polish but returned to Scotland each summer) with one being from Essex (Dinah McNicol). He is the perfect example of a killer hiding in plain sight. A chameleon who adapted to his surroundings, who blended into the community, often having a religious bias, constantly changing his name and leaving town suddenly owing money to unsuspecting people – not to mention the devastated lives left behind him.Jane Hamilton has written this book with a forensic eye for detail. The writing is extremely readable – no gratuitous detail, just information shared with a human touch. I felt that Jane actually cared and that of course whilst getting ahead with a story was important for her career, her integrity came into play too. Her compassion for the victims, their families and Tobin’s ex wives who also suffered at his hands shines clearly through the pages.Tobin was allowed to get away with his crimes, partly because of his own manipulation of people and knowing how to play the system but also because of failures of the policing system at the time. With police forces across the country not generally sharing information and with no centralised system, this was a gift to killers like him.It wasn’t until Operation Anagram was in force (Holmes 2) that killers like Tobin had their movements tracked. The police were sure that there were other victims and so every piece of information from various forces about Tobin over the years were logged to a central database. Details and locations of missing women were included, details double checked. The families of the victims were to finally have answers.Although Tobin is the focus of the book, the author refers to the murders of other victims, some of which remain unsolved – this highlighted that some families will never have the answers or justice they deserve.A difficult subject but written with empathy showing respect to the victims and their families.#truecrime #myreadingcornerblog @randomthingstours
